DAAD visiting professor Dr. Vojislav Kecman

DAAD visiting professor Dr. Vojislav Kecman from the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand

In the winter semesters 2004/2005 and 2005/2006, Prof. Dr. Kecman from the University of Auckland will perform research and have lectures here in Soest. In particular, he will be involved within the modules "Intelligent Systems", "Signal Processing" and "Technical Publication and Presentations" in the English course Master of Science.

Prof. Kecman received his degrees in the field of control engineering and system modelling. He was the DFG Visiting Professor at TU Darmstadt, Konrad Zuse Professor at FH Heilbronn, Fulbright Scholar at the M.I.T., Cambridge, MA, USA, Research Fellow at the Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA, DAAD Stipendiat at the Stuttgart University, and the DAAD Visiting Professor at the FHTW in Berlin and at the TU Darmstadt. He authored two books on system dynamics modelling and control in Yugoslavia. The book ‘State Space Models of Lumped and Distributed Systems’ was published by Springer Verlag in 1988 (in Lecture Notes in Control and Information Sciences Series). His newest book on Learning and Soft Computing; Support Vector Machines, Neural Networks, and Fuzzy Logic Models, is published by The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, USA (see the site: www.support-vector.ws). He holds a patent on image compression too. His current research interests include: machine learning and in particular learning from empirical data (knowledge discovery, data mining) by support vector machines and neural networks, as well as modelling human knowledge by fuzzy logic systems. Theory, practice, philosophy and versatility of these soft computing tools is investigated and used in broad fields of different (nonlinear) regression (function approximation) and pattern recognition (classification, decision making) tasks. His 'traditional' expertise is in control systems, mathematical modelling and simulation and mechatronics. Upon the invitations, he delivered seminars from the fields of research at - Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology M.I.T., University of California Santa Barbara, Rutgers University, Humboldt Universität and GMD First Berlin, TU Bremen, TU Dresden, TH Darmstadt, TU Clausthal, Research Institute for Knowledge Systems Maastricht, Melbourne University, The University of Novi Sad and The University of Banja Luka. Vojislav Kecman is the member of ASME, IFAC, VDI and IEEE. He has served as a member of the General Council of IMEKO. He is also the member of the IFAC’s Application Committee.
